Launched in 2026, ALUS Estrie is the newest ALUS community in Quebec, created through a partnership between the Fédération de l’UPA-Estrie and ALUS Canada.
The ALUS Estrie program spans 88 municipalities across the region’s six regional county municipalities (RCMs), as well as the City of Sherbrooke. Most of the territory falls within the Saint-François River watershed, with portions also located in the Chaudière and Nicolet watersheds. The Estrie region is known for its diverse agricultural landscape, shaped by fertile valleys, Appalachian highlands, and extensive forest cover. Agriculture plays a key role in both the regional economy and the vitality of rural communities.
Agriculture in Estrie is largely centered around dairy and beef production, which account for a significant share of both farmland and agricultural businesses. In particular, dairy farming helps define the rural landscape, with forage crops, silage corn, and pastureland being widely cultivated.
Compared to other agricultural regions in Quebec, Estrie stands out for its extensive forest cover. Many farms integrate both agricultural and forestry activities, including maple syrup production, forest management, farming on rolling terrain, and agroforestry practices.
ALUS Estrie is coordinated by the environment and wildlife team at the Fédération de l’UPA-Estrie. Their work is supported by the ALUS Estrie Partnership Advisory Committee, which brings together farmers, regional stakeholders, and environmental organizations.
Working closely with local partners, ALUS will deliver tangible improvements in water quality, biodiversity, and wildlife and pollinator habitat, while helping foster a more balanced and sustainable relationship between agriculture and the environment.
