The ALUS SODCAP program is a partnership between ALUS and the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program Inc. (SODCAP), an environmental non-government organization active in the Milk River Watershed.
SODCAP Inc. works in cooperation with local ranchers, industry, and biologists to create, protect and maintain native prairie habitat for a number of species-at-risk, including the greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), swift fox (Vulpes velox), Sprague’s pipit (Anthus spragueii) and chestnut-collared longspur (Calcarius ornatus).
Located in the far southwest corner of Saskatchewan, the Milk River Watershed spans two million acres, extending from the Cypress Hills on the Alberta border, east to the Big Muddy Badlands in southern Saskatchewan, and south to the United States border. It is home to Grasslands National Park, seven former PFRA community pastures (the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration’s Community Pasture Program) and three former provincial community pastures. Half of the Milk River Watershed still consists of native prairie grassland, and another 25% is under permanent tame cover, making this area a haven for wildlife.
The ALUS SODCAP team works with local farmers and ranchers to help establish ALUS projects that help address several important environmental issues in the Milk River Watershed.
Priorities include improving riparian areas, controlling invasive weeds and converting cropland to native prairie grasslands, all to improve environmental outcomes and increase biodiversity, including habitat for multiple species at risk.
ALUS SODCAP participants receive annual, per-acre payments for the management and maintenance of ALUS projects on their land.
These ALUS projects produce cleaner water, cleaner air and greater biodiversity, including pollinator habitat, for the benefit of everyone in surrounding communities.
