PRESS RELEASE | Calgary, Alberta, March 25, 2020 | ALUS Canada’s Western Hub to benefit from nearly $450,000 in new funding from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership in Alberta (Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change program)
Situated in the beautiful Peace Region of northwestern Alberta, ALUS Northern Sunrise is Canada’s most northerly ALUS Canada community. ALUS Northern Sunrise is a partnership between ALUS Canada and Northern Sunrise County.
Northern Sunrise County is located east of the Peace and Smoky Rivers, with crown land occupying 94% of its 2.5 million hectares; agricultural, residential, commercial and recreational areas are concentrated in the remaining six percent.
Here at ALUS Northern Sunrise, we work alongside local farmers and ranchers to establish ecological ALUS projects. In essence, we are taking environmentally sensitive, marginal lands out of agricultural production and appointing them to the production of cleaner air, cleaner water, increased wildlife habitat and other ecosystem services.
Our ALUS projects include fencing around waterbodies, creating, upgrading and expanding dugouts, installing off-site watering systems for livestock, expanding and repairing riparian buffer zones and re-establishing native grasses, trees and shrubs in the uplands.
ALUS Northern Sunrise provides professional support and annual, per-acre payments for the creation, maintenance and long-term management of these environmental projects.
Together, ALUS Canada and Northern Sunrise County are working towards sustaining agriculture, wildlife and natural space for all residents – one acre at a time.
