Located in west-central Alberta, Brazeau County joined the ALUS program in the spring of 2016 and continues to gain momentum in the community.
Brazeau County’s ALUS program, through its coordinators, participants and leaders, has worked hard to improve riparian habitat, increasing flood and drought resilience and improving water quality within the Modeste subwatershed.
Although widely known for its rich oilfields, it is also recognized for recreational opportunities and abundant hay and pastureland. The majority of producers in the area are farmers and ranchers who raise livestock, typically cattle. Many are particularly interested in exclusion fencing projects to reduce grazing impacts on riparian habitat and forest stands. Other popular projects include tree planting, bank restoration and stabilization, and wildlife and pollinator habitat.
The program is managed by the Agricultural Services Department, with guidance from a Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC). ALUS Brazeau’s PAC reviews and approves all potential ALUS projects in the community. The PAC consists of five area producers, one member of Council and a representative from each of four external agencies
ALUS Brazeau is proud to work with agricultural producers to protect, enhance and create valuable ecosystem goods and services.
