ALUS Pincher Creek was launched in April 2022 to assist farmers and ranchers in the Municipal District of Pincher Creek in implementing projects that deliver ecosystem services, such as cleaner air, cleaner water, carbon sequestration, erosion control, flood and drought mitigation, as well as pollinator and wildlife habitat.
Projects for farmers and ranchers available through ALUS Pincher Creek include riparian pasture establishment, alternative watering systems, native species conservation and restoration, wetland, lake, and streambank protection & enhancement, and others that fit with the requirements of the program’s funding partners.
Located in southwest Alberta, the M.D. of Pincher Creek is part of the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, which also encompasses portions of northwestern Montana and southeastern British Columbia along the Continental Divide.
The Crown of the Continent landscape is recognized for its distinctive geography of mountains, valleys, rolling foothills and prairie. It’s also abundant with wildlife, including deer, elk, mountain sheep and goats, as well as grizzly and black bears, cougars, and wolves. Incredibly, over half the flora species of Alberta are represented here.
The community of the M.D. of Pincher Creek shares its land and water with many neighbours who will be engaged through the efforts of ALUS Pincher Creek, including the Kainai (Blood) and Piikani (Peigan) First Nations to the northeast and south, and Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park directly south.
ALUS Pincher Creek’s mission will be to work with the agricultural community to help farm and ranch families continue to steward the lands and waters they call home. The community is committed to an understanding of farming and ranching as coexisting with natural communities.
Guided by a local Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC), which is majority comprised of local agricultural producers, the ALUS model ensures that projects are determined at the local level to address the community’s environmental and economic priorities.
