Avec son f<\/span>ils<\/span> Guillaume <\/span>Bercier<\/span> et <\/span>s<\/span>a partenaire <\/span>Karine<\/span>, <\/span>Bercier<\/span>, <\/span>ils <\/span>exploite<\/span>nt<\/span> La Ferme <\/span>Agriber<\/span> Inc<\/span>, une ferme et une entreprise de semences de <\/span>2800<\/span> acres \u00e0 St-Isidore, en Ontario. Marc <\/span>g\u00e8re des cultures commerciales <\/span>et a \u00e9t\u00e9 l’un des premiers \u00e0 adopter le soja et le chanvre. Pour Marc, la famille, l’environnement et l’agriculture sont \u00e9troitement li\u00e9s. Il a des bons souvenirs de son enfance pass\u00e9e sur la ferme de son p\u00e8re. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, l’agriculture \u00e9tait une activit\u00e9 \u00e0 temps partiel et les producteurs se retiraient dans la for\u00eat pendant les mois d’hiver pour d\u00e9fricher, couper et vendre du bois.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le grand-p\u00e8re de Marc \u00e9tait b\u00fbcheron et, en hiver, il aidait \u00e0 d\u00e9fricher les terres de la r\u00e9gion pour l’agriculture. En \u00e9t\u00e9, il amenait Marc et son fr\u00e8re p\u00eacher dans le ruisseau Scotch, tout pr\u00e8s. Malheureusement, les pratiques de gestion des terres ont fragilis\u00e9 la rivi\u00e8re et les poissons ont disparu en quelques ann\u00e9es seulement. La disparition des poissons de cet \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me est rest\u00e9e grav\u00e9e dans l’esprit de Marc, et a dict\u00e9 ses propres pratiques de gestion des terres. Il a compris \u00e0 un tout jeune \u00e2ge l\u2019impact de celles-ci sur l\u2019environnement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ma famille et moi avons vu \u00e0 quelle vitesse on peut r\u00e9tablir un habitat naturel sur <\/span>une<\/span> <\/span>ferme<\/span>\u202f\u00bb<\/span>, <\/span>d\u00e9clare Marc. <\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00ab \u00c7a<\/span> cr\u00e9e <\/span>une situation gagnant-gagnant <\/span>p<\/span>our l’habitat naturel et<\/span> pour<\/span> l’agriculture.<\/span>\u202f\u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n

La motivation de Marc pour <\/span>entretenir<\/span> <\/span>s<\/span>es <\/span>projets ALUS est dict\u00e9e par une \u00e9thique de respect et de responsabilit\u00e9 envers les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations futures. Ayant vu et v\u00e9cu la d\u00e9t\u00e9rioration biologique <\/span>d<\/span>u <\/span>ruisseau <\/span>Scotch<\/span>, entre autres, <\/span>Marc est pr\u00e9occup\u00e9 par <\/span>l<\/span>a sant\u00e9 de<\/span> <\/span>l\u2019environne<\/span>ment <\/span>dans <\/span>son coin de pays<\/span>. En effet, <\/span>c<\/span>es derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, des r\u00e9gions comme St-Isidore, le long de la rivi\u00e8re des Outaouais, ont connu des inondations extr\u00eames. Marc sait que l’agriculture joue un r\u00f4le dans la gestion des terres, un r\u00f4le qui peut am\u00e9liorer l’habitat d’esp\u00e8ces comme les oiseaux ou les poissons, aider \u00e0 s\u00e9questrer le carbone et les nutriments, et contribuer \u00e0 pr\u00e9venir les inondations.\u00a0 Le projet de zone humide de Marc a inspir\u00e9 d’autres agriculteurs \u00e0 jouer un r\u00f4le actif dans la r\u00e9solution de ces probl\u00e8mes et \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des changements positifs \u00e0 plus grande \u00e9chelle.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fort d\u2019une exp\u00e9rience interg\u00e9n\u00e9rationnelle de plus de cent ans en agriculture, Marc partage son expertise en agriculture durable dans toute la r\u00e9gion. En effet, il a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 restaurer certaines zones et a m\u00eame plant\u00e9 de nombreux arbres le long de Scotch Creek, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 son grand-p\u00e8re l\u2019amenait p\u00eacher quand il \u00e9tait enfant.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The water that winds through the valley is a signature feature of the landscape. On a sunny summer day, you might just see a herd of Mule deer along the banks; with their large ears pulled upright as they bend down to sip from the water. Although hidden in the moving water, the river is home to many species of fish, such as Northern Pike and Perch.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Qu\u2019Appelle River runs through the Qu'Appelle Valley northwest of Regina, Saskatchewan. Spanning nearly 500 kilometers, this winding waterway courses through much of the province. The Qu\u2019Appelle runs east from Lake Diefenbaker and into six major lakes before joining up with the Assiniboine River in Manitoba. <\/span>It\u2019s quite a winding river, and every time it takes a turn the banks change shape, scrawling natural history across the landscape.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Sigurdons\u2019 property is on the cusp of the Qu\u2019Appelle Valley, their rangeland rolling downwards into the valley where the river runs. The river is surrounded by scenic and bountiful grassland where they pasture their cattle. It\u2019s all connected, the landscape, the cattle, the communities upstream and downstream\u2014it\u2019s connected to the Sigurdsons and how they manage their operation, how they work to support the resilience of this sensitive landscape.<\/span><\/p>

When the Sigurdsons purchased their 3200-acre ranch near Lumsden, SK, the health and productivity of the land was depleted due to past grazing practices. This motivated Dale to look for solutions to improve the quality of the environment, knowing how important environmental health is for his cattle and his community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s all one and the same. To succeed economically, you have got to succeed environmentally as well<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> says Dale.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/h4>

Seeking to do more with the valley bottom, Dale installed roughly 20 acres of fencing in 2020, which allowed him to go into those 320 acres of bottom land and heavily harrow the earth. This intervention stimulated the native grass seeds found in the soil and patiently the Sigurdsons stewarded the natural forage to return. An underground pipeline sourced from the low-lying riparian area feeds almost all the pastures throughout the year. These interventions have proven even more important in recent years, as significant periods of drought have impacted the region.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cBy keeping the<\/span> cattle<\/span> away from the <\/span>shore<\/span> it just keeps that water so much cleaner and <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> better for the<\/span>m<\/span>. I think <\/span>that\u2019s<\/span> fairly important<\/span>.<\/span>\" says Dale<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h4>

In addition to the new infrastructure, Dale and JoAnne<\/span> also modified the rotational grazing they had always employed, now reserving one pasture entirely until the late fall. They also reduced the number of head on the farm, relieving grazing pressure and conserving water resources.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The benefits of riparian areas are innumerable, but for Dale, the main benefits include minimizing erosion, recharging ground water and filtering surface run-off. The Sigurdsons project is illustrative of the possibilities that can be pursued in partnership with ALUS.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Through community, financial <\/span>support<\/span> and <\/span>technical <\/span>guidance, ALUS has helped the Sigurdsons<\/span><\/span> do more on their <\/span>land than<\/span> they would have been able to do alone.<\/span> Their work<\/span> highlights<\/span> the ways clean water is critical to both farming and the <\/span>natural <\/span>environment<\/span>. <\/span>Desire for <\/span>successful <\/span>water <\/span>stewardship is <\/span>intuitive<\/span> for most farmers, but t<\/span>ogether<\/span> with ALUS<\/span>, <\/span>the Sigurdsons<\/span> are <\/span>connected to the resources<\/span> they need<\/span> to manage the natural<\/span> habitat <\/span>along th<\/span>e<\/span> beautiful<\/span>,<\/span> winding <\/span>Qu\u2019Appelle River<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 2020, the Sigurdsons partnered with <\/span>ALUS WUQWATR<\/a> to construct an exclusion fencing project on their farm, subsequently restoring the riparian area along the Qu'Appelle River and implementing an enhanced grazing plan for their cattle. In the past, this low-lying area within the valley experienced flooding regularly in the spring. The Sigurdsons have attempted to grow hay in the valley bottom, but with little success. This non-productive area eventually became a \u201cweed pit\u201d that they kept the cattle out of. It wasn\u2019t doing much good.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Marc travaille avec ALUS Ontario Est<\/a> depuis septembre 2013. Son premier projet ALUS consistait \u00e0 convertir un ravin entre sa propri\u00e9t\u00e9 et une parcelle nouvellement achet\u00e9e en une zone naturelle. Cette zone humide est devenue un refuge pour la faune et la flore \u00e0 Saint-Isidore. Marc et sa famille voient souvent des h\u00e9rons, des canards et des rapaces utiliser cet habitat, o\u00f9 les fleurs sauvages et les plantes indig\u00e8nes colorent le paysage. Les Bercier adorent patiner dans le ravin en hiver. Nul doute que ces souvenirs resteront grav\u00e9s dans la m\u00e9moire de leurs enfants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En plus de ce projet, Marc a \u00e9galement plant\u00e9 de nombreux arbres le long de sa propri\u00e9t\u00e9. De plus, il souhaite maintenant \u00e9tendre la zone riveraine et doubler la superfice d\u00e9j\u00e0 importante de la zone humide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
