Le long de la rivi\u00e8re Qu’Appelle, au nord-ouest de Regina, les <\/span>Sigurdson<\/span> ont mis en place un projet de cl\u00f4ture d’exclusion et restaur\u00e9 une zone riveraine avec ALUS.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

La rivi\u00e8re Qu’Appelle traverse la vall\u00e9e de la Qu’Appelle au nord-ouest de Regina, en Saskatchewan. S’\u00e9tendant sur pr\u00e8s de 500\u202fkilom\u00e8tres, cette voie d’eau sinueuse parcourt une grande partie de la province. La Qu’Appelle part du lac Diefenbaker et se jette dans six grands lacs avant de rejoindre la rivi\u00e8re Assiniboine au Manitoba. C’est une rivi\u00e8re tr\u00e8s tortueuse, et chaque fois qu’elle prend un virage, les berges changent de forme, inscrivant l’histoire naturelle dans le paysage.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L’eau qui traverse la vall\u00e9e est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment essentiel de ce paysage. Lors d’une journ\u00e9e d’\u00e9t\u00e9 ensoleill\u00e9e, souvent vous pouvez voir un troupeau de cerfs mulets le long des rives, avec leurs larges oreilles dress\u00e9es vers le haut alors qu’ils se penchent pour boire de l’eau. Bien que l’eau en mouvement les dissimule, la rivi\u00e8re abrite de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces de poissons, comme le grand brochet et la perche.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

La propri\u00e9t\u00e9 des Sigurdon se trouve \u00e0 l’or\u00e9e de la vall\u00e9e de la Qu’Appelle, et leurs terres descendent vers la vall\u00e9e o\u00f9 coule la rivi\u00e8re. La rivi\u00e8re est entour\u00e9e de prairies pittoresques et g\u00e9n\u00e9reuses o\u00f9 ils font pa\u00eetre leur troupeau. Le paysage, le b\u00e9tail, les collectivit\u00e9s en amont et en aval, tout influence la fa\u00e7on dont les Sigurdon g\u00e8rent leurs op\u00e9rations et dont ils travaillent pour soutenir la r\u00e9silience de cet environnement unique.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lorsque les Sigurdson ont achet\u00e9 leur ranch de 320\u202facres pr\u00e8s de Lumsden, en Saskatchewan, la condition et la productivit\u00e9 de la terre s\u2019\u00e9taient amoindries en partie \u00e0 cause des anciennes pratiques de p\u00e2turage. Cela a motiv\u00e9 Dale \u00e0 chercher des solutions pour am\u00e9liorer la qualit\u00e9 de l’environnement, sachant \u00e0 quel point la sant\u00e9 environnementale est importante pour son b\u00e9tail et sa collectivit\u00e9.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En 2020, les Sigurdson se sont associ\u00e9s \u00e0 ALUS WUQWATR<\/a> pour construire un projet de cl\u00f4ture d’exclusion sur leur ferme. Cela a permis de restaurer la zone riveraine le long de la rivi\u00e8re Qu’Appelle et de mettre en \u0153uvre un mod\u00e8le de p\u00e2turage am\u00e9lior\u00e9 pour leur b\u00e9tail. Par le pass\u00e9, cette zone de basse altitude dans la vall\u00e9e \u00e9tait r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement inond\u00e9e au printemps. Les Sigurdson ont tent\u00e9 d\u2019y cultiver du foin, mais sans grand succ\u00e8s. Cette aire non productive est finalement devenue une \u00ab\u00a0fosse \u00e0 mauvaises herbes\u00a0\u00bb \u00e0 laquelle le b\u00e9tail n\u2019avait pas acc\u00e8s, une v\u00e9ritable perte.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En 2020, d\u00e9sireux d’en faire plus avec cette parcelle de la vall\u00e9e, Dale a install\u00e9 une cl\u00f4ture entourant environ 20\u202facres, o\u00f9 il a vigoureusement hers\u00e9 la terre. Cette intervention a stimul\u00e9 les graines d’herbes indig\u00e8nes pr\u00e9sentes dans le sol et, avec beaucoup de patience, les Sigurdson ont veill\u00e9 \u00e0 ce que le fourrage naturel revienne. Une canalisation souterraine partant de la rivi\u00e8re alimente presque tous les p\u00e2turages tout au long de l’ann\u00e9e. L\u2019inlassable travail des Sigurdson s’est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 encore plus important ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, la r\u00e9gion ayant connu des p\u00e9riodes de s\u00e9cheresse consid\u00e9rables.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En plus de la nouvelle infrastructure, Dale et Joanne ont \u00e9galement modifi\u00e9 <\/span>le mod\u00e8le de <\/span>rotation des p\u00e2turages qu’ils avaient toujours <\/span>utilis\u00e9s<\/span>, <\/span>r\u00e9servant d\u00e9sormais un<\/span>e section de<\/span> p\u00e2turage <\/span>en entier<\/span> jusqu’\u00e0 la fin de l’automne. <\/span>Ils ont <\/span>aussi<\/span> r\u00e9duit le nombre de t\u00eates sur l’exploitation, ce qui a permis d’all\u00e9ger la pression exerc\u00e9e par le p\u00e2turage et de pr\u00e9server les ressources en eau.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les <\/span>bienfaits<\/span> procur\u00e9s par l<\/span>es zones riveraines sont innombrables, mais pour Dale, les principaux avantages sont de minimiser l’\u00e9rosion, de recharger les nappes phr\u00e9atiques et de filtrer les \u00e9coulements de surface. Le projet des <\/span>Sigurdson<\/span> illustre bien les possibilit\u00e9s qui peuvent \u00eatre mises en \u0153uvre en partenariat avec ALUS.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En offrant le support d<\/span>‘une<\/span> collectivit\u00e9, <\/span>du<\/span> soutien financier et <\/span>des<\/span> conseils techniques, ALUS <\/span>\u00e0<\/span> <\/span>permis aux<\/span> <\/span>Sigurdson<\/span> <\/span>de<\/span> faire plus sur leurs terres que ce qu’ils auraient pu faire seuls. Leur travail met en \u00e9vidence l’importance <\/span>d\u2019une eau saine<\/span> pour l’agriculture et l’environnement. Le d\u00e9sir d’une bonne gestion de l’eau est intuitif pour la plupart des agriculteurs, mais <\/span>en se joignant au programme<\/span> ALUS, les <\/span>Sigurdson<\/span> ont eu acc\u00e8s<\/span> aux ressources dont ils <\/span>avaient<\/span> besoin pour <\/span>prendre soin de<\/span> l’habitat naturel le long de la magnifique et sinueuse rivi\u00e8re Qu’Appelle.<\/span> <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1906, Steph<\/span>e<\/span>n<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> great<\/span>-<\/span>grandfather left Denver<\/span>,<\/span> Colorado, riding his horse over a thousand miles through the unforgiving terrain of the American Northwest. He knew he had found the perfect place to relocate his family farm when he saw the landscape nestled between the expansive grass plains of the prairie and the aspen outcrops of the foothills. But it was<\/span>n\u2019<\/span>t easy. Stephen\u2019s great<\/span>-<\/span>grandparents and grandparents faced major challenges while living and working on the farm. After the war, cancer took the life of his grandfather, but Stephen<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s grandmother persevered, raising 5 children on her own.<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Despite the hardships, the foothills of Alberta have sustained his family and helped them thrive for over a hundred years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Stephen <\/span>and <\/span>Helena <\/span>now <\/span>run Speedwell Farms in the valley of Ghost Pine Creek in <\/span>Red Deer<\/span> County, Alberta. Stephen is a third-generation rancher and has been involved with <\/span>ALUS <\/span>as a participant,<\/span> a member of the<\/span> Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC) <\/span>and a farmer <\/span>liaison.<\/span> His first ALUS project was a restored wetland. <\/span>T<\/span>oday<\/span>, <\/span>he is<\/span> actively contributing to the <\/span>Grazing Forward program <\/span>by <\/span>practicing <\/span>adaptative multi-paddock (AMP) grazing.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cA major tornado, three years of drought, a market collapse and the border closed\u2026 With the farm on life support, we had to re-evaluate our goals and dreams. We changed our focus to strengthening what we had\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/i>\u2014Stephen Smith\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>

Like their recent ancestors, Stephen\u2019s family also faced challenges that threatened their livelihood. When Stephen took over the farm, he attempted to grow grain, but did not achieve success. Instead, he transitioned to cattle ranching with a small annual crop rotated in. Today, his herd counts approximately 200 head, and the total farm size is 1,700 acres, which includes 500 acres of annual crops. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Stephen and Helena are innovators, exploring wetland conservation <\/span>since<\/span> they first began working with Red Deer County\u2019<\/span><\/span>s Off the Creek <\/span><\/span>program<\/span><\/span> in the early 2010s. A few years later,<\/span> in 2015,<\/span> the ALUS program launched in the region. With the expertise provided by ALUS, they <\/span>could<\/span> identify the marginal areas on Speedwell Farm<\/span>s<\/span> and initiate their first ALUS project<\/span>:<\/span> the creation of a wetland. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0A grazing plan can be simple on flat, even ground<\/span>.<\/span> But Stephen\u2019s farm has a unique topography. His grazing project required a complex design of crossed fenced pastures to decrease the time cattle are present on the parcel and increase the rest the parcel g<\/span>ets from grazing. Additionally, this fencing protects woodlands, boggy ground and knolls with high erosion risk. In some cases, tame grass is also separated from native grass. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Using his pressurized alternative watering system, Stephen can now pump water to paddocks beyond the wetland, improving soil health and plant biodiversity across the pastures. Extra fencing can also be added to separate grass species, shorten grazing time, lengthen rest time and increase the volume of litter and grass left for ecological services<\/span>. With more grass and litter, farmers help preserve biodiversity, filter water and sequester carbon and nutrients in the soil. <\/span>These interventions were uniquely designed based on Stephen\u2019s relationship with the land and his intergenerational knowledge of the landscape. The adaptive strategy used here both raises overall productivity and maximizes the amount of carbon captured.<\/span><\/p>

\u201c<\/span><\/span>ALUS helped make it possible to <\/span>execute<\/span> the first step of protecting the sensitive areas. Now with Grazing Forward, we <\/span>have the ability to<\/span> pump water from the lake up 150 feet of <\/span>a <\/span>steep hill to the paddocks. This allows further fragmentation of paddocks<\/span>,<\/span> keep<\/span>ing<\/span> nutrients up on <\/span>the <\/span>range away from wetlands, therefore producing even more ecosystem services (including carbon capture).\u201d<\/span><\/span> \u2014<\/span> Stephen Smith<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h4>

\u00a0Family is especially important for the Smiths. Stephen fondly recounts spending time with his grandmother in her study as a young boy, usually with a warm cup of tea. He recalls his grandmother stating that in a city, you would often go without, but at the farm, \u201cyou will always have food on the table, wood for the fire and a roof over your head.\u201d As an immigrant and single parent, she faced innumerable challenges when supporting her family, but she was forever thankful for the farm. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

With these projects completed and the new infrastructure in place, Stephen can focus on the flow of cattle through the system, timing of grazing, weather adjustments and maintenance of the fence and the alternative watering system. In many ways, Stephen has honoured the arduous work of his great-grandparents and grandparents by producing vital ecosystem services for the surrounding communities and ensuring the farm will be able to sustain generations to come.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
