R\u00e9sidents de longue date de Chatham-Kent, Betty et Allan entretiennent une relation \u00e9troite avec la terre.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Cette terre \u00e9tait exploit\u00e9e par mon p\u00e8re depuis les ann\u00e9es 1950, et nous avons achet\u00e9 cette parcelle de sa succession en 2201\u00a0\u00bb, dit Betty. Ce terrain a ajout\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de 20 hectares aux 9 hectares adjacents que Betty et Allan poss\u00e9daient d\u00e9j\u00e0, pour un total de 29 hectares, qui abritent un projet de prairie ALUS de 1,6 hectares, ainsi que 5,2 hectares de for\u00eat mixte de feuillus.<\/p>\n

Le lien de Betty et Allan avec la terre remonte cependant \u00e0 bien plus loin que le p\u00e8re de Betty. Dans les ann\u00e9es 1790, l’arri\u00e8re-arri\u00e8re-arri\u00e8re-grand-p\u00e8re d’Allan, Prindle Hubbell, a \u00e9tabli un domaine 1790 \u00e0 une courte distance de l’endroit o\u00f9 se trouve maintenant leur projet ALUS.<\/p>\n

Ce lien de longue date avec la terre joue un r\u00f4le dans la conscience aigu\u00eb qu’ont les Hubbell de la sant\u00e9 et de la p\u00e9rennit\u00e9 de celle-ci. Lorsque le p\u00e8re de Betty cultivait la terre, il se tournait vers les meilleures pratiques de gestion de l’\u00e9poque pour tirer le meilleur parti de ses terres, instituant un travail minimum du sol pour pr\u00e9server la qualit\u00e9 de celui-ci.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Il \u00e9tait toujours int\u00e9ress\u00e9 par la pr\u00e9servation de la qualit\u00e9 et de la sant\u00e9 du sol\u00a0\u00bb, dit Betty. \u00ab\u00a0Papa avait du respect pour la terre et son b\u00e9tail, et il a toujours exerc\u00e9 son m\u00e9tier avec soin.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Leur int\u00e9r\u00eat commun les a amen\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00e9tablir un projet de gestion de for\u00eat sur une deuxi\u00e8me propri\u00e9t\u00e9 qu’ils poss\u00e8dent, un bois\u00e9 au nord de Thamesville. Ils ont ensuite mis en place un projet de prairie \u00e0 herbes hautes sur cette m\u00eame propri\u00e9t\u00e9. C’est ainsi qu’ils ont trouv\u00e9 le chemin d’ALUS Chatham-Kent<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Les Hubbell ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de retirer une parcelle de leurs 29 hectares en production et de l’\u00e9tablir en tant que prairie \u00e0 grandes herbes afin d’am\u00e9liorer la biodiversit\u00e9<\/a>. Pour ce faire, ils se sont adress\u00e9s \u00e0 Greg Van Every, de la Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority, qui a propos\u00e9 le programme ALUS comme solution.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Nous avons constat\u00e9 que le processus de demande et d’approbation a \u00e9t\u00e9 facilit\u00e9 par le personnel tr\u00e8s comp\u00e9tent de l’Office de protection de la nature de la vall\u00e9e de la Basse-Thamse et par les contacts ALUS qu’il nous a fournis\u00a0\u00bb, explique Allan. \u00ab\u00a0Il n’y a donc pas eu de processus compliqu\u00e9, long et stressant. C’\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s simple et direct.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Entre la for\u00eat de feuillus et la prairie \u00e0 herbes hautes, un \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me dynamique et riche en biodiversit\u00e9 peut s’\u00e9panouir, car chacun contribue \u00e0 la sant\u00e9 de l’autre, en abritant diff\u00e9rentes esp\u00e8ces et en permettant \u00e0 certaines d’entre elles d’acc\u00e9der aux diff\u00e9rents environnements dont elles ont besoin pour prosp\u00e9rer.<\/p>\n

Le d\u00e9sir des Hubbell d’am\u00e9liorer la biodiversit\u00e9 va de soi. Ils ont v\u00e9cu toute leur vie dans la r\u00e9gion et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moins de changements importants.<\/p>\n

Sur le terrain bois\u00e9 situ\u00e9 au nord de Thamesville, le village o\u00f9 il a grandi, Allan a baign\u00e9 dans la nature d\u00e8s son enfance.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0J’ai remarqu\u00e9 au cours de ma vie la disparition de certaines esp\u00e8ces que je croisais fr\u00e9quemment dans mon enfance et que je ne croise plus aujourd’hui\u00a0\u00bb, explique Allan. Il note des esp\u00e8ces comme la couleuvre fauve orientale (pantherophis gloydi<\/em>) et la couleuvre \u00e0 nez plat orientale (heterodon platirhinos<\/em>).<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Quand j\u2019\u00e9tais enfant, chaque saison, j’avais l’habitude de ramasser des morilles. Maintenant, je n\u2019en trouve plus.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Allan remarque \u00e9galement des changements dans l\u2019interaction entre la terre et le climat.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Nous avons connu une ann\u00e9e exceptionnellement pluvieuse en 2021, et sur notre propri\u00e9t\u00e9 foresti\u00e8re, nous avons vu une quantit\u00e9 exceptionnelle d’eau stagnante dans la for\u00eat\u00bb, dit Allan. \u00ab\u00a0Je n’ai jamais vu autant d’eau stagnante dans les bois.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Heureusement, l’exc\u00e8s d’eau stagnante n’a pas cr\u00e9\u00e9 de probl\u00e8mes sur leur propri\u00e9t\u00e9. Il est difficile de pr\u00e9voir le r\u00e9sultat de l’augmentation des pr\u00e9cipitations et de l’eau stagnante au fil du temps, mais avec la prairie \u00e0 herbes hautes et les nombreux arbres, ils ont la chance d’avoir un syst\u00e8me racinaire d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 qui aide \u00e0 contr\u00f4ler et \u00e0 capturer les eaux de surface et les eaux souterraines.<\/p>\n

\n

\u00ab\u00a0Nous savons, d’apr\u00e8s ce que nous lisons sur le changement climatique, que l’augmentation de la temp\u00e9rature a permis la r\u00e9tention de plus d’humidit\u00e9 dans l’air, qui est ensuite lib\u00e9r\u00e9e sous forme de pr\u00e9cipitations\u00a0\u00bb, explique Allan. \u00ab\u00a0Ainsi, des pr\u00e9cipitations plus importantes pourraient \u00eatre un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne qui nous accompagnera pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Il y a de nombreux avantages \u00e0 s’associer \u00e0 ALUS sur un projet d’herbes hautes, l’un d’entre eux \u00e9tant que le propri\u00e9taire foncier est indemnis\u00e9 pour le temps et les ressources investis dans la gestion du projet. Toutefois, la gestion d\u2019un tel projet pr\u00e9sente certaines difficult\u00e9s, comme l’explique Betty.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0L’un de nos plus grands d\u00e9fis est la lutte contre les mauvaises herbes envahissantes\u00a0\u00bb, affirme Betty. \u00ab\u00a0Il y a beaucoup de verge d’or – de l\u2019ivraie – qui est apparue. Bien s\u00fbr, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 coup\u00e9e \u00e0 l’automne, mais nous nous attendons \u00e0 la revoir au printemps.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

L’\u00e9limination diligente de la vergerette saison apr\u00e8s saison devrait permettre aux esp\u00e8ces indig\u00e8nes de supplanter les esp\u00e8ces envahissantes \u00e0 long terme, ce \u00e0 quoi les Hubbell s’emploient.<\/p>\n

Tourn\u00e9s vers l’avenir, les Hubbell s’engagent \u00e0 accro\u00eetre la r\u00e9silience de leurs terres pour en am\u00e9liorer la sant\u00e9 \u00e0 long terme, un leg qui est particuli\u00e8rement important pour Betty et Allan.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Nous avons un petit-fils, qui a maintenant 18 mois. Et un deuxi\u00e8me petit-fils doit arriver ce printemps\u00a0\u00bb, explique Allan. \u00ab\u00a0Nous esp\u00e9rons que ce projet joue un petit r\u00f4le dans l\u2019\u00e9dification d\u2019un avenir durable et d\u2019un meilleur environnement pour eux, lorsqu\u2019ils seront adultes.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Nous aimerions pr\u00e9server ind\u00e9finiment les bois et les zones d’herbes hautes de nos deux propri\u00e9t\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb, affirme Betty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Lifelong residents of Chatham-Kent, Betty and Allan have a close relationship to the land.<\/p>

\u201cThis land was farmed by my dad since the 1950s, and we purchased this piece of property from his estate in 2021,\u201d says Betty. That piece of property added 48 acres to an adjacent 22 acres that Betty and Allan already owned, making 70 acres total, which is home to a 4 acre ALUS grassland project, as well as 13 acres of mixed hardwood forest.<\/p>

Betty and Allan\u2019s connection to the land goes back much further than Betty\u2019s dad, though. Allan\u2019s great, great, great \u2014 in fact, let\u2019s say exceptionally great\u2014grandfather, Prindle Hubbell, established a homestead in the 1790s, which was a short distance from where their ALUS project now resides.<\/p>

This long connection to the land plays a role in the Hubbells\u2019 keen awareness of the land\u2019s health and well-being. When Betty\u2019s father cultivated the land, he looked to the best management practices of the time to get the most from his land, instituting minimum tillage to preserve soil quality.<\/p>

\u201cHe was always interested in preserving the quality of the property, of the soil,\u201d says Betty. \u201cDad had respect for the land and his livestock, and he always farmed with care.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>

And that ethos was passed along to her.<\/p>

\u201cWe both have an interest in the environment and caring for the environment,\u201d says Betty of herself and Allan.<\/p>

Their shared interest led them to establish a managed forest agreement project on a second property they own, a woodlot north of Thamesville. They then established a tallgrass prairie project on that same property, and through that they found their way to ALUS Chatham-Kent<\/a>.<\/p>

The Hubbells decided to take a parcel of their 70 acres out of production and establish it as tallgrass prairie to improve biodiversity<\/a>. To do this, they turned to Greg Van Every at the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority who brought the ALUS program forward as a solution.<\/p>

\u201cWe found the application and approval process was made easy by the knowledgeable staff at the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority and the ALUS contacts that they provided, as well,\u201d says Allan. \u201cSo, there wasn't a complicated, time consuming, stressful process. It was very simple and straightforward.\u201d<\/p>

Between the hardwood forest and the tallgrass prairie, a dynamic ecosystem rich in biodiversity can flourish, as each contributes to the health of the other, housing different species and providing some species access to different environments they need to thrive.<\/p>

The Hubbells\u2019 desire to improve biodiversity makes sense. They\u2019ve lived in the area their whole lives and have seen significant changes.<\/p>

On the woodlot north of Thamesville, the village where he grew up, Allan was immersed in nature from childhood.<\/p>

\u201cI have noticed over the course of my lifetime the disappearance of certain species that in my childhood I frequently came across, and now I never come across,\u201d says Allan. He notes species like the eastern foxsnake (pantherophis gloydi<\/em>) and eastern hog-nosed snake (heterodon platirhinos<\/em>). \u201cI used to gather morels as a child, every season, never find them now.\u201d<\/p>

The changes are not just in the species, but in how the land and the weather interact.<\/p>

\u201cWe saw an exceptionally rainy year in 2021, and at our forest property we've seen an amount of water, standing water in the forest, that's exceptional,\u201d says Allan. \u201cI've never seen so much water standing in the woods.\u201d<\/p>

Luckily, the excess of standing water hasn\u2019t created any problems on their property. It\u2019s hard to predict what the outcome of increased rainfall and standing water will be on their property over time, but with tallgrass prairie and hardwood, they are lucky to have a developed root system that helps control and capture surface water and groundwater.<\/p>

\u201cWe know from what we read about climate change that rising temperature allowed the retention of more moisture in the air, which is then released as rainfall,\u201d says Allan. \u201cSo heavier rainfall may be something that's with us for many years to come.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>

Not that there aren\u2019t challenges in managing their tallgrass prairie project, as Betty explains.<\/p>

\u201cOne of our biggest challenges would be the control of invasive weeds,\u201d says Betty. \u201cThere's a fair bit of fleabane, horseweed, that came up. Of course, it was chopped in the fall, but we expect to see it again in the spring.\u201d<\/p>

There are many benefits of partnering with ALUS on a tallgrass project, one being that the landowner is compensated for their efforts to manage the project. Diligent removal of the fleabane season after season should see the native species outcompete the invasive in the long term, something the Hubbells are working towards.<\/p>

With an eye to the future, the Hubbells are committed to growing the resilience of their land to improve its health in the long-term; the future is important to Betty and Allan.<\/p>

\u201cWe have one young grandson, now 18 months old. And the second grandson on the way is due to arrive this spring,\u201d says Allan. \u201cWe hope this project plays a small part in building our sustainable future for a better environment as they grow towards adulthood.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWe would like to preserve both of the woodlots and the tallgrass areas on both of our properties, indefinitely,\u201d says Betty.<\/p><\/blockquote>
