Il a travaill\u00e9 en \u00e9troite collaboration avec ALUS sur des projets de durabilit\u00e9 de l\u2019environnement qui lui permettent d\u2019harmoniser son mod\u00e8le d\u2019entreprise \u00e0 ses valeurs.<\/p>\n<h4>B\u00e2tir un environnement durable sur les terres agricoles<\/h4>\n<p>Ryan a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 s&rsquo;impliquer aupr\u00e8s d\u2019ALUS en tant que participant en 2016, lorsqu&rsquo;il a inscrit 71 heactares de ses terres agricoles dans son premier projet environnemental. En 2020, il a inscrit 31 hectares suppl\u00e9mentaires, pour un total de 102 hectares jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0La premi\u00e8re chose qui m\u2019a attir\u00e9 chez ALUS, c\u2019est la flexibilit\u00e9 des conditions\u00a0\u00bb, se souvient Ryan. \u00ab\u00a0La dur\u00e9e du contrat ne doit pas obligatoirement \u00eatre longue, ce qui permet de changer de plan en cours de route. Le programme peut aussi \u00eatre combin\u00e9 avec le Partenariat canadien pour l\u2019agriculture.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Les objectifs de Ryan en mati\u00e8re d\u2019agriculture durable et de gestion de l&rsquo;environnement l&rsquo;ont convaincu qu&rsquo;ALUS serait un partenaire efficace pour faire avancer son travail, en assurant une plus grande r\u00e9silience dans son exploitation.<\/p>\n<p><span>Ryan est titulaire d\u2019un baccalaur\u00e9at en sciences de l\u2019agriculture de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Saskatchewan et il exploite \u00e9galement une ferme aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de ses parents, qui sont agriculteurs dans la r\u00e9gion depuis\u202f1979.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>Il est l\u2019un des 30\u00a0producteurs de la r\u00e9gion qui ont choisi d\u2019inscrire des sections de leurs terres au programme <span><a href=\"https:\/\/alus.ca\/fr\/collectivite_alus\/alus-wuqwatr\/\">ALUS-WUQWATR<\/a><\/span> (organisme de bassins versants des rivi\u00e8res Wascana et Upper Qu\u2019Appelle). Il y parvient notamment en cultivant des esp\u00e8ces fourrag\u00e8res tol\u00e9rantes \u00e0 la salinit\u00e9, des herbes \u00e0 racines profondes qui pr\u00e9sentent une multitude d&rsquo;avantages pour la gestion de l&rsquo;environnement.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0J\u2019essaie de s\u00e9questrer le carbone et de prendre soin du sol en travaillant avec, et non contre, la nature. C\u2019est pourquoi le programme ALUS m\u2019int\u00e9ressait\u00a0\u00bb, ajoute-t-il.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>En effet, la r\u00e9gion de Bruno est marqu\u00e9e par une salinit\u00e9 extr\u00eame du sol. Les cultures de Hering Farms avaient du mal \u00e0 lutter contre les mauvaises herbes et l&rsquo;\u00e9rosion, des probl\u00e8mes aggrav\u00e9s par la composition du sol. En introduisant ces esp\u00e8ces fourrag\u00e8res avec le support d\u2019ALUS, Ryan a fait des progr\u00e8s notables sur chacun de ces fronts, prot\u00e9geant du m\u00eame coup ses cultures c\u00e9r\u00e9ali\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p>Les plantes fourrag\u00e8res vivaces sont efficaces pour extraire les nutriments du sol et, par cons\u00e9quent, r\u00e9duire la salinit\u00e9 du sol, tandis que le syst\u00e8me racinaire profond de l&rsquo;herbe contribue \u00e0 s\u00e9curiser la couche de terre arable. En outre, les racines profondes pi\u00e8gent le carbone atmosph\u00e9rique et assurent son stockage \u00e0 long terme.<\/p>\n<h4 aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\" xml:lang=\"FR-CA\" lang=\"FR-CA\" class=\"TextRun SCXW234442914 BCX8\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW234442914 BCX8\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 3\">Des pratiques d\u2019agriculture durable b\u00e9n\u00e9fiques pour la ferme et la faune sauvage<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW234442914 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:40}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Ryan a \u00e9galement travaill\u00e9 avec ALUS sur des projets qui ont permis d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la sant\u00e9 des zones riveraines, ce qui a produit un effet positif sur la qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019eau et la biodiversit\u00e9 sur la ferme. Les projets profitent \u00e9galement \u00e0 la collectivit\u00e9 \u00e9largie de Ryan, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une eau plus propre en aval et \u00e0 un \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me plus riche et plus r\u00e9silient.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Les avantages sont concrets, notamment en ce qui concerne la conservation de la faune. Alors m\u00eame que les effets positifs du travail de Ryan se font sentir, de plus en plus d\u2019animaux sauvages ont \u00e9t\u00e9 aper\u00e7us sur le site de la ferme o\u00f9 le premier projet ALUS a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en \u0153uvre.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, dans les zones o\u00f9 j\u2019ai mis en place mes projets ALUS, j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 observer davantage d\u2019animaux sauvages, comme des cerfs mulets, des lapins et des coyotes\u00a0\u00bb, explique M.\u00a0Ryan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Fort de son succ\u00e8s des derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, c\u2019est avec enthousiasme que Ryan envisage l\u2019avenir. Il souhaite inscrire d\u2019autres zones plus petites dans d\u2019autres projets pour s\u2019attaquer \u00e0 des probl\u00e8mes environnementaux similaires.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=\u00a0\u00bb10800,10798,10796&Prime; fullwidth=\u00a0\u00bbon\u00a0\u00bb _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.9.4&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb][\/et_pb_gallery][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":10813,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"<h3 aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ryan\u00a0Hering\u00a0from Bruno, Saskatchewan uses tame forages to mitigate soil erosion and salinity while addressing sustainability issues like enhancing wetlands and wildlife conservation<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"335559738\":40}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the midst of\u00a0Saskatchewan\u2019s vast prairies, one grain farmer is going the extra mile to weave sustainable agriculture practices and nature protection into his everyday work.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As the owner of\u00a0Hering\u00a0Farms Inc., a 4,800-acre site\u00a0in\u00a0the small community of Bruno, Ryan\u00a0Hering\u00a0has\u00a0worked closely with ALUS on environmental sustainability projects that\u00a0align his ethos with his farm business model.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h4 aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Combining family history with environmental sustainability<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"335559738\":40}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Agriculture\u00a0has always been\u00a0Ryan\u2019s\u00a0passion.\u00a0He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan.\u00a0Although\u00a0this\u00a0section of land has only been in the family for four years, he also farms alongside his mother and father, who have been farming in the area since 1979.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ryan\u00a0first became\u00a0involved with ALUS as a participant\u00a0in\u00a02016, when he enrolled 175 acres of his farm into his first environmental sustainability project.\u00a0In 2020, he went further and enrolled another 76 acres,\u00a0for\u00a0a grand total of 251 acres so far.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe first thing that attracted me to ALUS was the flexible terms,\u201d Ryan recalls. \u201cIt isn\u2019t a long-term binding contract, which helps with changing plans down the road, and it could be combined with the Canadian Agricultural Partnership as well.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ryan\u2019s own sustainable farming and conservation goals also convinced him to partner with his local ALUS program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cALUS was of interest to me as I am trying to sequester carbon and take care of the soil; working with nature, not fighting it,\u201d he adds.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ryan is one of 30 producers in the region who have enrolled sections of their land with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alus.ca\/alus_community\/alus-wuqwatr\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ALUS WUQWATR<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(Wascana and Upper Qu\u2019Appelle Watersheds Association Taking Responsibility). To date, this ALUS program has expanded to include over 3,500 acres in the region\u2019s four sub-watersheds: Wascana Creek, Upper Qu\u2019Appelle River, Lanigan-Manitou\u00a0and the Last Mountain Lake watershed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h4 aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Using tame grasses to enhance wetlands and prevent soil erosion<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"335559738\":40}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across the\u00a0hundreds of\u00a0acres\u00a0that he has\u00a0enrolled in ALUS, Ryan\u2019s projects focus on sustainable agriculture practices like planting tame forage. By growing this forage, Ryan hopes to address salinity, soil\u00a0erosion\u00a0and weed control\u00a0on his land. The\u00a0tame\u00a0grasses\u00a0Ryan uses\u00a0can\u00a0help mitigate these issues and promote environmental sustainability, specifically in relation to\u00a0long-term carbon sequestration.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More than merely\u00a0being useful for\u00a0Ryan\u2019s business, the tame forage has\u00a0helped\u00a0enhance wetlands and waterways on Ryan\u2019s farm. In line with Ryan\u2019s initial aim when\u00a0getting involved with\u00a0ALUS, the project has also helped to sequester carbon\u00a0while mitigating erosion and saline soils.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h4 aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sustainable agriculture practices bring benefits to farm and to wildlife<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"335559738\":40}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By\u00a0improving the health of\u00a0riparian\u00a0areas, the project has also led to cleaner water and\u00a0increased\u00a0biodiversity on his farm.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The benefits are palpable, especially when it comes to wildlife\u00a0conservation. As the positive effects of Ryan\u2019s\u00a0hard\u00a0work take hold, more and more\u00a0wild animals\u00a0have been spotted wandering around the site of the farm\u2019s first ALUS project.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI even started noticing more wildlife, like mule deer, rabbits and coyotes, over the last few years in areas where my ALUS projects are located,\u201d Ryan says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Building on his success over the past few years, Ryan is enthusiastic about\u00a0the future.
