Ce syst\u00e8me est b\u00e9n\u00e9fique pour les\u00a0Moyers\u00a0et pour l’environnement car il prot\u00e8ge les zones humides\u00a0sur leurs terres. Lorsque le b\u00e9tail n’a pas besoin d’acc\u00e9der \u00e0 la source d’eau naturelle, cela l’emp\u00eache d’avoir des sabots pourris ou de rester coinc\u00e9 dans la boue. De plus, l’eau que boivent les vaches provient du puits et\u00a0est exempte\u00a0d’eaux de ruissellement, de bact\u00e9ries et d’autres mati\u00e8res naturelles qui s’accumulent dans la zone humide.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n En\u00a0limitant\u00a0ainsi\u00a0l’acc\u00e8s du b\u00e9tail \u00e0 la zone humide et \u00e0 la zone v\u00e9g\u00e9tale environnante, la qualit\u00e9 de l’eau et la robustesse de l\u2019habitat\u00a0s\u2019en trouvent am\u00e9lior\u00e9es. Ceci est particuli\u00e8rement bienvenu pour les\u00a0orignaux\u00a0qui utilisent la zone humide des\u00a0Moyers.<\/span> Parall\u00e8lement, le mode de p\u00e2turage en rotation offre de nombreux avantages en termes d\u2019agriculture durable. (picture by Myrna Pearman)[\/caption]\n\nOn his beef farm in Elnora, Alberta, Josh Moyer is\u00a0working\u00a0to\u00a0create\u00a0a better future\u2014not just for him and his young family, but also for the local ecosystem\u00a0and community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nThe Moyers\u2019\u00a0operation, Dry Island Cattle Company,\u00a0has been involved with ALUS\u00a0<\/span>Red Deer County<\/span><\/a> since 2018. So far, over 19\u202facres on their farm are enrolled in ALUS environmental projects, including an alternative watering system (AWS) and cross-fencing for rotational grazing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\u201cOur\u00a0Farmer\u00a0Liaison\u00a0[with ALUS]\u00a0was a huge help in getting us started,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Josh.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/blockquote>\n
Using two approaches to promote sustainable agriculture\u00a0and protect natural resources<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\nAn\u00a0alternative watering system\u00a0gives livestock\u00a0a substitute\u00a0to drinking directly from a natural body of water.\u00a0The Moyers made use of well on their land as the source for their AWS.\u00a0The system\u00a0benefits the Moyers and the\u00a0environment\u00a0by\u00a0protecting\u00a0wetlands\u00a0on their property. When the livestock don\u2019t have to access the natural water source, it prevents them from getting hoof rot or stuck in muck.\u00a0As well, the water the cows drink is fresh from the well and not full of runoff, bacteria and other naturally occurring material that collects in the wetland.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\nAnd by limiting\u00a0livestock\u00a0access to the\u00a0wetland\u00a0and surrounding vegetative area, the water quality and habitat\u00a0are more robust.\u00a0This is especially welcome to Elk that make use of the Moyers\u2019\u00a0wetland.<\/span>\n<\/span>\nMeanwhile, their\u00a0rotational grazing system offers many benefits, such as\u00a0keeping grass and soil healthy and reducing the need\u00a0for additional\u00a0fertilizer.\u00a0When it comes to environmental\u00a0benefits,\u00a0<\/span>research from the University of Alberta<\/span><\/a>\u00a0indicates\u00a0that benefits of adaptive multi-paddock grazing approaches include\u00a0improved\u00a0drought, flood and climate resilience,\u00a0increased vegetation growth\u00a0and improved water quality.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n\n\u201cIt\u2019s come along way! I bet our grazing days are up 30\u201335 per cent,\u201d Josh says of their rotational grazing practice and projects with ALUS. \u201cWe\u2019d like to do more.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\n
Feeling the benefits of sustainable\u00a0farming on the business<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\nTogether, these two approaches improve the quality of the soil\u00a0while\u00a0helping\u00a0Josh win the war on weeds and provide\u00a0his cows with\u00a0fresh drinking water.
