Le programme soutient les agriculteurs qui \u00a0cr\u00e9ent, g\u00e8rent et entretiennent de nouvelles parcelles de nature afin de fournir des services \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques adapt\u00e9s \u00e0 leurs activit\u00e9s agricoles. Le programme vise \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer la sant\u00e9 des sols, la qualit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;eau et l&rsquo;habitat faunique dans le nord-ouest de l&rsquo;Ohio, en particulier dans le comt\u00e9 de Defiance.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Le comt\u00e9 de Defiance est une communaut\u00e9 rurale et agricole situ\u00e9e dans le bassin versant de la rivi\u00e8re Maumee, le plus grand bassin versant des Grands Lacs. La ville de Defiance est situ\u00e9e pr\u00e8s du confluent des rivi\u00e8res Auglaize, Tiffin et Maumee. Autrefois partie int\u00e9grante du Grand Marais Noir, la r\u00e9gion est aujourd&rsquo;hui une zone agricole productive qui abrite des vestiges de zones humides et de for\u00eats riveraines.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Historiquement, le Grand Marais Noir \u00e9tait une vaste zone humide bois\u00e9e qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 ass\u00e9ch\u00e9e pour rendre les terres arables, laissant derri\u00e8re elle des sols argileux lourds. Ces sols n\u00e9cessitent des syst\u00e8mes de drainage par drains souterrains pour g\u00e9rer l&rsquo;eau. Ce contexte met en lumi\u00e8re l&rsquo;importance des foss\u00e9s de conservation qui fonctionnent comme des zones humides lin\u00e9aires et r\u00e9pondent directement aux d\u00e9fis li\u00e9s au ruissellement et \u00e0 la qualit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;eau propres au nord-ouest de l&rsquo;Ohio. Les sols argileux lourds b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient des infrastructures de drainage, mais contribuent au ruissellement des eaux pluviales, ce qui entra\u00eene une turbidit\u00e9, une s\u00e9dimentation et une prolif\u00e9ration d&rsquo;algues dans le lac \u00c9ri\u00e9. La perte d&rsquo;habitat a \u00e9galement r\u00e9duit le nombre d&rsquo;esp\u00e8ces indig\u00e8nes telles que la caille colin et les oiseaux aquatiques.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>ALUS Defiance est la deuxi\u00e8me collectivit\u00e9 am\u00e9ricaine \u00e0 adopter le mod\u00e8le ALUS, une initiative canadienne qui soutient des projets fond\u00e9s sur la nature et men\u00e9s par des agriculteurs, adapt\u00e9s aux priorit\u00e9s environnementales et \u00e9conomiques locales. Guid\u00e9 par un comit\u00e9 consultatif de partenariat (CCP) compos\u00e9 majoritairement d&rsquo;agriculteurs, le programme collabore avec le Council of the Great Lakes Region (CGLR), la ville de Defiance et le comt\u00e9 de Defiance. Les projets se concentrent sur la cr\u00e9ation et la restauration de zones humides, la conservation des foss\u00e9s, la restauration des berges et la cr\u00e9ation de prairies indig\u00e8nes afin de r\u00e9duire la pr\u00e9sence de nutriments et de s\u00e9diments dans l\u2019eau tout en fournissant un habitat essentiel \u00e0 la faune sauvage.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Le comt\u00e9 de Defiance a une longue tradition de conservation, avec l&rsquo;adoption g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e de pratiques telles que l&rsquo;agriculture sans labour, le labour r\u00e9duit et la restauration des zones humides. Cependant, des efforts suppl\u00e9mentaires sont n\u00e9cessaires pour atteindre les objectifs de r\u00e9duction de la charge en nutriments du lac \u00c9ri\u00e9. ALUS Defiance fournit un cadre pour la mise en \u0153uvre de solutions fond\u00e9es sur la nature qui n&rsquo;ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9es dans le cadre des programmes de conservation actuels. En offrant de nouvelles possibilit\u00e9s de fournir des services \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques suppl\u00e9mentaires, ALUS Defiance contribuera \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer la productivit\u00e9 agricole et la qualit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;eau.
