On November 4, 2016, The W. Garfield Weston Foundation and ALUS Canada proudly announced a new $5 million investment to support the groundbreaking environmental program now known as ALUS Canada, A Weston Family Initiative.
Held on opening day of the 2016 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, the national press conference was attended by the Weston family and more than 100 special guests from Toronto's business community, philanthropic foundations, CSR professionals, leaders of ALUS programs from Alberta, Quebec and Ontario, and ALUS farmers and ranchers from across the nation.
“We are delighted to announce that The W. Garfield Weston Foundation will make a $5 million grant to ALUS Canada, an organization we have long supported,” said Tamara Rebanks, Chair of the Foundation’s Conservation Committee. “We believe strongly in the ALUS model, which delivers tens of thousands of acres of natural habitats by engaging Canadian farm communities.”
To celebrate the launch, we also presented two special, $10,000 awards. The Weston Family Ecosystem Innovation Award was presented to Dr. Andrew MacDougall (University of Guelph, Ontario), and the ALUS Canada Producer Innovation Award went to Gerry Taillieu (ALUS Parkland, Tomahawk Ranch, Alberta).
The press conference was followed by an afternoon tea reception at which guests sampled honey, jam and other fine farm products from ALUS participants, and learned more about ALUS from guest speakers representing ALUS communities in Alberta, Quebec and Ontario.

Introducing the New Acre™ Project
|
|
ALUS Canada is proud to introduce the New Acre™ Project, a new, unique opportunity to drive positive environmental change in this country. The first of its kind in North America, the New Acre™ Project allows individuals, corporations and organizations to invest in the ALUS program and obtain quantifiable environmental outcomes in return.
“The New Acre Project will empower Canadians to make the difference we want to see in the world: If you want to have cleaner air, cleaner water and more biodiversity, you can make that happen by sponsoring our New Acres,” says Bryan Gilvesy, CEO of ALUS Canada. ALUS will roll out the New Acre™ Project over the coming months: Find out more on our website.

What is ALUS?
ALUS Canada, A Weston Family Initiative, offers a unique method for improving the environment: we support farmers and ranchers who steward their land in a way that produces cleaner air, cleaner water, increased biodiversity and other ecosystem services that benefit all Canadians. Thanks to a significant investment by The W. Garfield Weston Foundation, ALUS is expanding rapidly across the country. Having introduced a new logo, a sleek website and a fresh e-newsletter in 2016 ALUS is now launching a brand-new product that will revolutionize the way Canadians support the environment.
